Thinking Activity on Matthew Arnold - The Study of Poetry

Here is my answer of thinking activity which is given by our professor Here is the link of given task.... Matthew Arnold was an English poet and cultural critic of Victorian era who worked as an inspector of schools. Arnold is acknowledged as being one of the first poets to display a truly modern perspective in his work.Perhaps his most famous piece in literary criticism is his essay "The Study of Poetry". In the Victorian period in between the two two esteem of Art for Art's sake and Art for Life's sake Arnold presented the Golden mean. Write about one idea of Matthew Arnold which you found interesting and relevant in our times. Mathew Arnold in his definition of poetry said that, Poetry is a criticism of life.It also seems very relevant in present time also. It must concern itself with life and its problems. Whatever poet or writer write that is not only considered as a  creative work but it is also a criticism of surrounding n

"Lagaan" - Movie Review

On the special occasion of Independence day ,film screening of movie "Lagaan" was organized by film screening committee members of our our English department of  MK Bhavnagar University. As a students of Literature we have to watch the movie with the help of various literary approaches and theories not only as a sake of entertainment. “ Lagaan – once upon a time in India” movie  was released in 2001.                      It is a sports-drama film, directed by Ashutosh Gowariker, produced by Aamir Khan and Mansoor Khan, written by Gowariker and Abbas Tyrewala. The film is set in the Victorian period of India's Colonial British Raj.  Here I am interpreting film as per my understanding. Patriotism The main theme of the movie is patriotism. In the movie the protagonist Bhuvan has a such qualities. Bhuvan shows the great courage in his rebellion against British provience. He wants the welfer of the village people and thats why he also encourages o

Robinson Crusoe

The Life and Strange Surprizing Adventure of Robinson Crusoe is a novel by Daniel Defoe which was first published in 1719. Robinson Crusoe is Daniel Defoe’s first long fictional work in which he introduced two of the most enduring characters English Literature: Robinson Crusoe and Friday.  Robinson Crusoe, is known for its intriguing portrayal of the evils of the  modern world such as colonization, economic individualism, slavery, etc. The story is based on the life of Alexander Selkirk who was a Scottish castaway and lived for four years on a Pacific Island. This classic tale of adventure features cannibals, captives and mutinners. This long novel can be broken down into three major movements. Part I: Before the Island Part II: Life on the Island Part III: Escape from the Island As we know that there are many movies which are based on the novel. In the same way there are more than one movie based on novel Robinson Crusoe. Robinson Crusoe is quite mo

Online discussion on Mario Vargas Llosa's Interview

Mario Vargas Llosa, the Peruvian novelist was awarded the noble prize for literature in 2010. His most recent novel is “The Neighborhood”. Here I try to point out some ideas which I like the most from his interview for the worldpost by Michael Skafidas, a journalist and professor of comparative literature at City University of New York. I personally believe that  it is right to denounce abuses against woman. As we know that in our society abuses against women are increasing day by day. As mentioned below here, he gave an example of feminist attacked in Nabokov's "Lolita", it is the best novel of 20th century. But feminism now has a kind of problem. It has become very sectarian, very dogmatic, and I think you have to criticize and oppose these trends. For example, recently we have had a big debate in Spain when a group of feminists attacked Nabokov’s “Lolita,” which I think is one of the greatest 20 th  century novels. They attacked it because they c

Thinking activity on Dryden's Essay: Of Dramatic Poesy

This post is in reference to the questions asked here: 1)  Do you find any difference between Aristotle's definition of Tragedy and Dryden's definition of play? After the Aristotle's definition of the tragedy, Dryden was the first who tried to give a well-formed definition of the play. Before clarify the difference let's see the some points which we can find in both the definition. In the definition of tragedy Aristotle talks about imitation of action. While in the definition of play Dryden talks about a just and lively image of human nature. We find something is that, they both talk about imagination but in different way. Aristotle talks about pleasure and the definition end with catharsis. In his definition the element of instruction remains missing. While Dryden in his definition by using the word delight and instruction of mankind tries to move further than Aristotle. 2) If you are supposed to give your personal predilection,

Thinking activity: Coleridge's Biographia Literaria

The Biographia Literaria is a critical work by Samuel Taylor Coleridge which is contained in 24 chapter. In this critical disquisition,Coleridge concerns himself not only with the practice of criticism but also with its theory. In the chapter of XIV of Biographia Literaria,Coleridge's view on nature and function of poetry is discussed in Philosophical term. The difference between prose and poem is discussed by Coleridge and the difference between poetry and poem is discussed by philosopher.                                            .    Difference between poem and prose. If we look at the difference  between the poem and prose it seems very  unclear, its a very difficult to get the clear cut idea about the dissimilarities between poem and prose. The main difference between these two is related with the object. The language of poem is sometimes highl y ornamental and also we find complexity of word. While in the Prose, the language  is very straightforward and we do

Paradise Lost

'Paradise Lost' is an epic poem by John Milton. The poem represents the great inevitable story of the Milton's tale-Adam and Eve's disobedience and the Fall of man and their expulsion from the Garden of Eden.If we look at the Biblical story of the fall of man than we see that the all stories were said form the divine perspective.God was the center of the Bible. While in the Paradise Lost divine perspective were retold from the human perspective.Milton 'justify the ways of God to men'.In fact he moves on the justify Man's ways in this world. Question 1. Write a critical note on the character of Eve. As per point of view Eve is the central character of the Book IX.  Eve was made from Adam's rib and she is a intellectual and beautiful one.But than even throughout the story we see the Eve's progression from an independent woman to a dependent woman.During the argument between Eve and Adam we find Eve's arguments are more powerful

Post viewing activity on Hamlet

'Hamlet' is a tragedy written by William Shakespeare. We have a movie screening of movie Hamlet which was adaption of Shakespeare's play Hamlet and directed by Kenneth Branagh. As a part of our post viewing activity, here I am sharing some point of views on it. How faithful is the movie to the original play?   The movie is quite faithful to the original play. But Kenneth Branagh's presented few scene which seems to be more powerful in the movie rather than in the original play. Because he wanted the viewers to find Shakespeare interesting and full of action and drama. For example we can find a little bit difference in the play scene. While in the play Hamlet was too scared to tell about the reality behind the death of his father. Whereas in the movie during the play scene Hamlet was running on the stage and pointing and shouting at Claudius.Because he wanted to people to make connection between plot of the play with the reality. This scene was very well
