Robinson Crusoe

The Life and Strange Surprizing Adventure of Robinson Crusoe is a novel by Daniel Defoe which was first published in 1719. Robinson Crusoe is Daniel Defoe’s first long fictional work in which he introduced two of the most enduring characters English Literature: Robinson Crusoe and Friday. Robinson Crusoe, is known for its intriguing portrayal of the evils of the  modern world such as colonization, economic individualism, slavery, etc.

The story is based on the life of Alexander Selkirk who was a Scottish castaway and lived for four years on a Pacific Island. This classic tale of adventure features cannibals, captives and mutinners. This long novel can be broken down into three major movements.
Part I: Before the Island
Part II: Life on the Island
Part III: Escape from the Island

As we know that there are many movies which are based on the novel. In the same way there are more than one movie based on novel Robinson Crusoe. Robinson Crusoe is quite modern novel that's why and that's why it seems easy to capture its plot into the movie.  Here I am discuss about the movie version of 1997 which was directed by Luis Bunuel.

The movie was very well directed and quite apt to the novel of Daniel Defoe. But the first two voyages of Robinson Crusoe was not depicted there. It seems like that it mainly focuses on the Crusoe's life on Island. The movie also represents the master slave relation of Robinson Crusoe and Friday.

The idea of colonialism is very well presented through the character of Robinson Crusoe. From Robinson’s harsh language to the through changed in Friday’s life, those characters and those scenarios serves as an allegory of the colonial process. Robinson represented the discriminatory colonist, and Friday represented enslaved natives without identity. Robinson Crusoe’s harsh language, his imposition of the name, habit, culture, religion upon Friday, the mastering skill of Robinson, the complete change in Friday’s life, the setting up of a new empire in the deserted island all represented the colonial process. There are also some scene which raise our curiosity. For instance how Crusoe tries to stand his own empire on Island and also his efforts to build a shelter and his ways of living these all things are also shown that how difficult or struggleful life he has to face on Island as a sole survivor.

Here we can say that in the movie Crusoe’s action symbolize what colonizers do when they come to ‘new’ lands. The title character Robinson represented the oppressor, discriminatory colonist and Friday stood for the oppressed, less-identity and suffered slave. Whatever Crusoe did on the island was classic colonialism.
