“Why should I keep holiday,
When other men have none?
Why but because when these are gay,
I sit and mourn alone.
And why mirth unseals all tongues
Should mine alone be dumb?
Ah! Late I spoke to silent throngs,
And now their our is come”.
“Compensation” is a famous essay written by
Ralph Waldo Emerson. The Essay was first appeared in his book Essays and later
on published in 1841. In 1844, Essays: Second Series was published and
subsequent republishing of Essays were renamed Essays: First Series. The essay
describes the spirit of laws of Karma or cause and effect in human action. He
indicates that he discovered this principles himself although it has been known
for millennia in India and its similar to Greek notions of justice and
reaction. In this essay Ralph Waldo Emerson answered the questions related to
the survivance of middle class people with having such a law compensation. Very
clearly without having any kind of exaggeration, Emerson portrayed the
realistic situation of middle class people.
“Money is an essential thing to survive in this
world”
The world becomes money centred, if one hasn’t
enough money or law compensation, surely
one has to evade all those ways which lead to joy of life because without
having money one can’t get joy. Though many are not agree on this specially who
believes that joy comes from withing, it is reality that true experience of joy
can only be experienced if there is money in pocket. If your wallet is empty
then your current of future thinking destroy the happiness you desired for.
The very opening line of the essay enable us to
think on need of money.
‘Why Should I Keep Holiday?’
If his compensation is low then there has no
authority to enjoyment to enter in life, by pointing out this he talks about men
who enjoys the presence of gay on their holiday, it reveals the deep thinking
of Emerson. Through the essay, Emerson seems as inspirational voice, who urges
other to do that is good for them. Following are the key points which were
suggested by Emerson,
He urges his readers to follow their individual
will rather than of conforming to social expectations.
He suggested to follow one’s own voice rather
than an intermediary’s such as the church.
Furthermore, he suggested people to be honest in
their relationship rather than to falsify their relation with others.
He posits the effects of self-reliance:
altering religious practices, encouraging Americans to stay at home and develop
their own culture and focusing on individual rather than societal progress.
