Sunday Reading: Literature and Religion
We used to give many
metaphors to literature such as a very
famous is that ‘Literature is mirror of society’. It projects the virtues of
society and ill side of society as well. It is also widely said that it is an imitation
of human action; here one thing that we all have to keep in mind is that
literature is not only a reflection of society but it is a corrective mirror as
well which demands us to bring some positive changes rather than following
blind beliefs.
Because of this we can always find a conflict between religion
and literature, literature helps in broaden our horizon whereas religion encroaches
it. Though the religion is all about myth and narratives which are known to us and we follow it without thinking rationally.
Religion blinds a man very strongly that he/she might not able to think rationaly or to question anything. Where as poetry as a part of literature, it is a criticism of life; aims to make people to ask questions. Almost every wriiter firmly belive that literature is all about to question everything scientifically. Niietzsche and Alburt Camus, both celebrated liberty of literature as well as Camus said in his work, The Rebel about it as,
That is true, but no artist can get along without reality. Artistic creation is a
demand for unity and a rejection of the world. But it rejects the world on account of what it lacks and in the name
of what it sometimes is.Rebellion can be observed here in its pure state and in its original
complexities. Thus art should give us a final perspective on the content of rebellion.”
― Albert Camus, The Rebel
What Alburt Camus said that can be found realistic in above mentioned views. Here in this one, we can also find that how it breaks down the stereotype of an idea of god. Though the religion supports the idea of god, literature denies it widely. It clearly states that without having any scientific proof how one can believe that god is alive. It is nothing more than superstition.
