Thinking activity on "The Old Man and the sea" by Ernest Hemingway

This blog is a part of my academic activity which was given to us during classroom discussion.

The Old Man and the Sea

The Old Man and the sea, a short heroic Pulitzer Prize winning novel was written by Ernest Hemingway and was published in 1952. It is the story of an aging Cuban fisherman struggles to make his living who hasn’t caught anything for 84 days and has lost his apprentice, Manoline.

Can you mark a critical phase of your life?

I just do not have that much critical phase in my life which Old man have in the novel The Old Man and the sea. When I was in my secondary education, I was ill for four months and exam was coming near. During that time I did not study anything. It was hardest task for me to cover up all the studies and equally I had that dream of got 1st rank in examination. During that time I really struggle a lot to cop up with my study which I missed during that time.

Do you have any such person whom you recall in the crisis?

Yes, I have a such person with whom I can share my problmes without thinking anything. But rather than to do it I would like to solve it as my own self. Because critical phase is itself a good teacher which allows us to teach lesson as our ownself.

What is the importance of dream of lions in the novel?

The dream of lions has a really a great significance as well as importance in the novel.Santiago has a dream of lion three times. Santiago’s dream about the lions is first described in the opening fifteen pages of the book. He used to see the lions playing on the beaches of Africa. This symbolizes that youthfulness of lion as well as that younger spirit of old man. Santiago was old but he has that spirit of strength and youngness which can be seen in his efforts to catch the Manolin-greates catch of his life. The dream of lions is something which also encourages him to do his best. Whenever he was in his gloomy phase during his voyage, he had a dream of lions and which boosted  up him.

Do you have any such scene or image you frequently like to visit?
Yes, I have such scene which I frequently like to cherish. Sitting at the peak of mountain and feels that fresh and stunning air. Which gives a peace of mind and provides a kind of enthusiasm for do  something.

What is the reason of your obsession for that scene?

I always like to be with the nature rather than to live along with this archetypal society. Everyone should not like to be with nature but I like the most.I do not have specific reason for it, perhaps my obsession for nature should be the reason behind it.

Replace the old man with yourself. How would be the approach if you fail like the old man in life?
The struggle which old man faced is not at all a cup of tea for everyone. Living alone during his voyage is also not that much easier task. Of I would be there, same like him I do not allow my spirit to let down due to such kind of struggle or even do not allow that younger spirit to let down. As far as the matter is concerned with his struggle to catch the Manoline. He did her best, at that time its not possible to easily catch Manoline with other tools, only the harpoon is the weapon. In a way Old man did his best and provided us a great example of….
Younger and enthusiastic spirit lives within old body.
