For his latest poem, “Sairandhri” he was awarded the SamarpanSanman by the BharatiyaCidhyaBhavan Educational Trust. Like his previous poem Shikhandi, this poem is also based on the one of the episode of the Mahabharata. This metrical poem was composed in prabandha from with seven cantos and fourtynine chapters. Through this classical folklore he tries to bring out that hidden personality of Draupadi.

Sairandhri : poem of lost identity

This is the story of women who lived without her identity rather than it presents the dilemma of identity. It is based on the episode of Mahabharata known as “Viratparv” in which Draupadi spent a year of her life as being a dasi of queen Sudeshna. Draupadi who is known as Yagaseni ,a daughter of king Drupad , wife of pandavas and sakhi of lord Krishna than even she had have to face lots of problems. By taking this episode key fact  Vinod Joshi brings out  that lost identity of Draupadi.

Idea of lost identity

This idea is connected with various aspects of life. This idea about lost identity or about the dilemma of identity is adroitly reflected in Jumpa Lahiri’s Namesake in which protagonist character Nikhil is stuck between two identity: the Indian tradition of his parents and the mainstream of American culture in which he grows up.

In the same way Vinod Joshi’s Sairandhri is about the struggle of Sairandhri, who has to live as being a dasi of Sudeshna. In a way Sairandhri is Draupadi who is known as Yagnaseni so here what is about her spirit or about her real identity? It is not easy task for her to live there alone or especially to live as maid of someone. Vinod Joshi’s Sairandhri is a representation of each and every women of society. This poem is a deconstruction of original myth, here sairandhri wants to marry with Karna rather to Arjuna because Karna is also living his life by hiding his real identity.

Indeed, it also refers to that idea of hidden personality. While living in society each and every person has been facing this problem, in order to follow the norm of so called society usually person tries to shape himself/ herself according to the norm of society, which ultimately lead us away from real identity.
